Free Tutorial – Fabric DahliaJune 3, 2016 / byFree Designs Admin / Categories : Free Printables, Free Project
This hand-sewn fabric flower is made from a long piece of fabric, stitched with a series of “M-shaped” running stitches. The stitches are all connected on one continuous thread, forming gathers as they are pulled. This gathered strip of fabric is then coiled into a circle and sewn on a piece of felt, forming a fabric dahlia.
Suitable fabrics for the dahlia include: starched quilt-weight cotton, wool, velveteen, canvas, and medium weight polyester. Very thin fabric will not hold the gathers well and is not recommended. Solid fabrics are preferable to prints, which tend to hide the gathers.
Many tutorials for this handmade fabric flower exist on the Internet; this is simply my method of sewing the fabric dahlia. I think they are fun to make and are stunning embellishments on bags and purses.
